Sarah Nemtsov was born in Oldenburg in 1980 and studied composition with Nigel Osborne, Johannes Schöllhorn and Walter Zimmermann in Hanover and Berlin. »Wildly proliferating inspiration« was how Deutschlandfunk described Sarah Nemtsov’s working method. Her catalogue of works, listing more than 150 compositions, includes very different genres. Her idiosyncratic musical idiom combines very different influences, from renaissance and baroque music to jazz and rock. The intensity of her music also derives from her frequent references to non-musical content. This includes political and social issues as well as interpersonal constellations. Sarah Nemtsov has received numerous awards and scholarships, including the German Music Authors Award in 2012 and the Busoni Composition Prize in 2013, as well as the Oldenburg Composition Prize for Contemporary Music in 2018. In 2020, she was nominated for the »Composer of the Year« award at the Opus Classic Awards. In 2021, she was elected a member of the Academy of the Arts of Saxony and the Academy of the Arts in Berlin. Since 2016, her works have been published by Ricordi. In 2025, she received the Heidelberg Prize for Female Artists.
Sarah Nemtsov has worked with numerous renowned orchestras and ensembles; her works have been performed at internationally prestigious festivals. She also made a stir with her musical theatre works. Her opera ›OPHELIA‹ was described by the journal ›Opernwelt‹ as »a profoundly moving musical theatre work of total transgression, full of ideas and allusions«. Her fourth evening-length opera, ›WE‹, will have its premiere at the Dortmund Opera in 2026. Since 2022, Sarah Nemtsov has been a professor of composition at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. She lives in Berlin.
