Bernard Foccroulle was born in Liège (Belgium) in 1953. He began his international career as an organist in the mid-70s, playing a wide range of repertoire from Renaissance to contemporary music. He has performed dozens of world premieres of works by Philippe Boesmans, Brian Ferneyhough, Betsy Jolas, Xavier Darasse, Jonathan Harvey and Pascal Dusapin. His discography includes 50 CDs, including the complete works of J.S. Bach, D. Buxtehude and M. Weckmann. In the 1980s, he was a member of the Ricercar Consort, an ensemble devoted mainly to German baroque music. Since then, he has made his name as an organist as well as a composer and general director of major musical institutions such as La Monnaie de Munt (1992-2007) and the Festival Aix-en-Provence (2007-2018).
As composer, Bernard Foccroulle has written works for soprano and orchestra (›Am Rande der Nacht‹ after Rilke), for soprano, baritone and chamber music ensemble (›E vidi quattro stelle‹after Dante’s Purgatorio). ›Zauberland‹, a song cycle for soprano and piano based on poems by Martin Crimp, premiered at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris in April 2019, under the direction of Katie Mitchell. His composition ›Le Journal d’Hélène Berr‹ for mezzo-soprano and piano quintet premiered in 2023 in a concert version, and has been staged in December 2023 at the Opéra du Rhin. In the same year, his opera ›Cassandra‹ premiered at La Monnaie in Brussels. The German premiere took place with great success in June 2025 at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin. Bernard Foccroulle’s compositions are published by Ricordi and Henry Lemoine.
