The International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) was founded in 2003 as Ensemble Modern’s training centre, in order to convey the numerous artistic movements of our times as well as an open, creative manner of dealing with artistic processes. It offers educational programs for a wide range of target groups, from outreach projects and international masterclasses for instrumentalists to formats designed for young artists at the beginning of their professional careers. Together with Ensemble Modern, it runs seminars for composers and offers masterclasses for young musicians and ensembles. Another key focus is the implementation of various education and outreach projects with schools. In November 2019, IEMA hosted a symposium on developments in the ensemble landscape in current music. In 2022, a symposium was held on musical-artistic education in times of changing career fields. In 2025, the International Ensemble Modern Academy joined the Ensemble Modern and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie in initiating the project ›Sound Port Frankfurt 2030 – Centre for Music and Experimentation‹. At their shared premises, the three institutions are pooling their competencies, energy and experience to create an innovative space for music.
The main focus is on the one-year Master’s programme, offered in cooperation with the Frankfurt am Main Academy of Music and the Performing Arts, and supported by Kunststiftung NRW, the GVL, Crespo Foundation, KfW Foundation and other sponsors, where instrumentalists, conductors, sound directors and composers work with members of Ensemble Modern and renowned composers and conductors including Mark Andre, Lucia Ronchetti, Rebecca Saunders, Sebastian Hilli, Liza Lim, George Lewis, Michael Wendeberg, Stefan Asbury, and Bas Wiegers. The results of this work are presented in more than 20 concerts in Germany and abroad. As a partner of the EU-funded Ulysses Platform, IEMA advances improved working conditions for artistic processes by engaging in cooperative projects with 13 other European academies and festivals.
The IEMA Ensemble 2025/26 will perform at the festival ›cresc... Biennale für aktuelle Musik Frankfurt Rhein Main‹ as well as at the ›Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik‹. International appearances will take the ensemble, within the framework of the Ulysses Platform, to the ›Ultima Festival‹ in Oslo and the ›Gaudeamus Festival‹ in Utrecht.
