Yixie Shen

Yixie Shen (b. 1993, China) is a Hamburg-based composer. She is the recipient of the Gaudeamus Award. Further prizes include Theater Kiel’s Hafenstädte – Tore zur Welt competition, Zwei Orgeln Plus by Musik 21 Niedersachsen, and the Alexander International Music Award by the Junge Norddeutsche Philharmonie. Her music, described as having a »beautiful sense of timbre and colour… a refined and gripping narrative«, has been performed internationally by leading ensembles and orchestras, including State Opera Hamburg, Symphoniker Hamburg, Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Ascolta, Ensemble KNM Berlin, Yarn/ Wire, Trio Catch, collective lovemusic, and at festivals such as Gaudeamus, Klangspuren Schwaz, Heinrich Schütz, Musik 21, and blurred edges and more. Her musical journey began under her father and continued at the Music Middle School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory with Ju Wenpei. A Bachelor’s degree in composition followed at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with Prof. He Xuntian. From 2018 she studied with Fredrik Schwenk at the University of Music and Theatre Hamburg, where she completed both her Master’s degree and Konzertexamen with distinction.
