Steve Reich, born in New York in 1936, is considered one of America’s most famous composers. His music, which many musicians have credited as highly influential, is known for its regular pulse, repetitions and a predilection for canons. It combines rigid structures with insistent, pressing rhythms and seductive instrumental colours. His compositions ›Different Trains‹ for string quartet and pre-recorded tape (1988) and ›Music for 18 Musicians‹ (1974–76) both won him Grammy Awards. His documentary video operas ›The Cave‹ (1993) and ›Three Tales‹ (1997), created in collaboration with his wife, the video artist Beryl Korot, have contributed significantly to the expansion and renewal of opera as a genre. Steve Reich originally studied percussion and philosophy at Cornell University in Ithaka, New York, then composition with Darius Milhaud and Luciano Berio at New York’s Juilliard School and Mills College in Oakland, California. Reich’s exploration of identical language recordings on several tape recorders led him to develop the technique of phase shifting, which he soon applied to instrumental settings. His music is influenced by jazz, West African percussion and Balinese Gamelan music. Steve Reich has received a plethora of awards and honours for his work.
