Eloain Lovis Hübner (they/them, she/her) works in the composition of contemporary music with a particular interest in experimental sound research in the analog world, spatialized formats, collaborativity, and the intertwining of musical practices with social, natural, technical, urban, domestic, and media environments. Many of their works fall within the realm of artistic research or draw on influences from sociology and queer studies.
Eloain studied composition (Cologne, Dresden, Oslo) and applied theater studies (Giessen) and often collaborates with artists from (almost) all disciplines. This has led to inter/transdisciplinary productions at numerous venues and festivals in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France – including immersive sound/space concepts, an interactive online installation, durationals, music theater for children, a theory opera in game show format, and projects with amateurs. The full-length opera ›opera, opera, opera! revenants and revolutions‹, created for the Munich Biennale 2020, has remained unperformed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Eloain collaborates with renowned ensembles and soloists throughout Europe. Vocal music plays a central role: as composer in residence at AuditivVokal Dresden in 2023, Eloain realized the theory opera ›Yes! Yes! Yes!‹ and other works; in 2025, the Vokalensemble Zürich performed the half-hour composition ›deckung (versuch 1)‹, based on artistic research into vocalities in climate protests. The first work in the ensemble cycle ›crunch modes‹ (2023-) was invited as the German section of the ISCM’s contribution to the World New Music Days 2025. A portrait album in the Edition Zeitgenössische Musik will be released in 2026. The album production ›n.o.t.i.o.n.s‹ (2023) and the composer/performer program ›Back on Stage‹ (2024) laid the foundation for Eloain’s own semi-improvisational practice on instruments that they cannot play in the classical sense.
Eloain teaches at the Academy of Performing Arts Baden-Wuerttemberg and in the MA Music and Scene in Transformation (FHNW Basel), among others, and was director of the Musik 21 Festival in Lower Saxony from 2021 to 2024. Since 2024, Eloain has been the first chair of the ›initiative neue musik berlin‹. Awards include the Composition Prize of the State Capital of Stuttgart, the Bremen Composer Prize, the Deutscher Musikautor*innenpreis, and residencies at Villa Aurora Los Angeles, Cité Internationale des Arts Paris to name a few. The complete œuvre is published by Topus Verlag Berlin.
