Adriane Westerbarkey was born in Munich. After graduating from high school, she completed an apprenticeship as a scenic painter at the Bavarian State Opera from 1993 to 1996 and continued working there on opera productions until 1999. In parallel, she was involved in projects for film, television, theatre, and animation, as well as productions at the Munich Theatre Academy. In 2001 she began her studies in stage and costume design under Prof. Karl-Ernst Herrmann at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich.
Since 2003 she has been working internationally as a stage and costume designer, collaborating with directors such as Florentine Klepper, Elisabeth Gabriel, Christiane Schneider, and André Wilms. Her engagements have taken her to major theatres including Schauspielhaus Stuttgart, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Basel, and the National Theatre Mannheim.
She was artistic director of the participatory project MusicArt Blitzlichter within the Berlin Philharmonic’s education program zukunft@berlinphil; her project »Ringed by the flat horizon« received the »Junge Ohren Award« in 2006. From 2016 to 2019 she taught costume design and costume history at the University of Art and Design Offenbach. Since 2022 she has been working in the field of inclusive education with artist Julius Bockelt at the Atelier Goldstein Academy. Since 2024 she has been developing the interdisciplinary education project Science Meets Art together with the Dr. Petra Joh Research Institute of the Frankfurt Foundation for Children with Cancer, connecting art and science in dialogical learning processes. In cooperation with artist Julius Bockelt (What’s going on inside a cell?) and motion designer Elena Osmann (Cell as Power Plant), this collaboration has led to several widely exhibited student projects. In 2026, the continuation Science Meets Art: Cell:Two will be presented in an exhibition at the Frankfurt Römer.
