Continuum XXI combines Ancient and New Music in a unique and innovative way. The ensemble develops projects exploring existential issues of the European tradition which are still relevant today: Chaos & Order, Silence & Scream, Liquid Love, Rage & Fragility, Madness & Truth, Ritual Reloaded, Hand & Machine, etc.
Continuum XXI has won major awards and scholarships, including Podium Gegenwart (German Music Council, first edition) and #MusikerZukunft (German Orchestra Foundation), and is a member of the renowned Ulysses Platform. The ensemble has given world premieres in many different aesthetics and formats, for example by Peter Ablinger, Raphaël Cendo, José Mª Sánchez-Verdú, Hanna Eimermacher, Eloain Lovis Hübner and others. Continuum XXI has performed at major festivals and venues throughout Europe, including Hellerau – European Centre for the Arts, the cresc… Biennial for Current Music in collaboration with IEMA, the Guggenheim Museum, the Kühlhaus Berlin, the cercle concert series in Vienna, the Divertimento Ensemble (Milan, Italy) and others.
One special focus of the ensemble are the interdisciplinary projects in which Ancient and New Music engage in dialogue with other artforms: dance (dancers of the Berlin State Ballet), performance and musical theatre (AuditivVokal Dresden, theatrale subversion), electronics, video and visual arts (Romy Rexheuser, Joan Gómez Alemany) and poetry, lyrics and philosophy (Friedrich Hausen, Kathrin Assauer).
Pedagogical projects such as ›InTrance!‹ are another important component of the ensemble’s activities; young people play with Continuum XXI regularly. The Leipzig Academy of Music and Theatre has created the new course ›Ancient and New Music Performance Practice‹ in order to establish the vision of Continuum XXI with students.
The ensemble has released a CD on the renowned label NEOS, combining Ancient and New Music by Monteverdi, Telemann, Sánchez-Verdú, Ligeti, Berio, Lazkano and other composers.
Research projects such as the arciorgano (a microtonal organ) and the collaboration with the SLUB Dresden are another important part of the ensemble’s work.
