John Hollenbeck | Dirigent
The Frankfurt Radio Big Band is joined by the multiple Grammy nominee John Hollenbeck and the Norwegian vocal ensemble Trondheim Voices for an evening resembling a sonic parcours, traversing jazz, current music and Improvisation. The composition ›Flock‹ by the American composer and jazz percussionist Hollenbeck takes us straight into flight formation. The work was written in Scotland in 2011, where he had observed huge flocks of geese. Hollenbeck, who is known for his poetic and structurally daring works, has also composed a new work for women’s chorus and big band, exploring the festival’s theme while giving the Frankfurt Radio Big Band a chance to show off its stylistic versatility. Adding the eight-voice chorus, Hollenbeck devises a web of voices and instruments which keeps morphing into new formations. In an electroacoustic solo improvisation, the Trondheim Voices also present their impressive art of composing in real time.
