Swarms fascinate us with their elegance and synchronicity – whether it’s a flock of birds flying in formation or the movement of fishes, ants or crowds of people. They result not from central control, but from local impulses that intensify to form complex patterns.

This principle also marks social dynamics: from networks to viral trends and ecstatic fan culture. The term »schwärmen« can indicate the process of becoming part of a greater movement, with all the inherent opportunities and risks. Especially in times of fragile social cohesion, the image of the swarm becomes a mirror for our present times – and a utopia of connection.

Music is a resonant space for swarms. It feeds simultaneously on collective organization and individual voices. When sounds are woven into dense surfaces or rhythmic structures pulsate like living organisms, music itself appears as a superorganism. At the same time, we can rave about a work, an ensemble, a sound: music as a »soundtrack of life«, an emotional centre.

With concerts, world premieres, installations and encounters, cresc… 2026 opens a space for thought – between nature, society and the arts.

In addition to the festival’s presenters, Ensemble Modern and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra as well as the hr Bigband and the IEMA Ensemble 2025/26, the events feature numerous composers, conductors, soloists and guests.
