About the seminar
The unique project model “International Composition Seminar” of the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) sets standards worldwide through its artistic and technical opportunities, especially the structure of its timeline. Initiated in 2004 with support from the Allianz Cultural Foundation, every two years it gives composers the opportunity to develop a new work under optimal conditions at the highest level in a professional and international context.
Under the competent guidance of Enno Poppe, one of the most important protagonists of contemporary music and a sought-after conductor, and together with Ensemble Modern, five selected composers can develop new works further at the 9th International Composition Seminar as part of the advanced, three-part seminar. This “work in progress” approach with several distinct stages enables an intense transfer of experience and knowledge.
The point of departure for this artistic dialogue will be the theme HUMAN__MACHINE which is the focus of the cresc... Biennial for Current Music Frankfurt Rhine-Main in 2020. Since 2011 the International Composition Seminar has been a fixed part of the festival, which also enables the compositional results to be disseminated in a more sustainable manner.
The results will be presented on March 1, 2020 in a new concert format, which stretches for several hours and thereby not only allows each individual work to find a new space of effectiveness, but also illuminates the festival’s theme more thoroughly through the interspersion of discourse and film contributions.
