Born in Tübingen in 1988, Malte Giesen studied composition and computer music with Marco Stroppa and Oliver Schneller at the Stuttgart Academy of Music and Performing Arts. From 2010 to 2011 he attended the Conservatory CNSM in Paris before moving on to the Music Academy Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he studied composition with Hanspeter Kyburz and electro-acoustic music with Wolfgang Heiniger. Giesen writes for chamber music ensembles and large orchestras. He has won several stipends and prizes for his works.
Among other awards, he received the first prize of the German Music Competition in composition in 2009. In 2012 he was the prize winner of the Master Course in Orchestral Composition of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2013 he was selected to participate in the Donaueschingen Music Days and in 2014 for the Summer Composition Institute at Harvard University. In 2016 he received the Carl von Ossietzky Prize for Contemporary Music of the City of Oldenburg.
Giesen’s compositions have been performed at festivals such as Acht Brücken Köln, Wien Modern, the Klangwerkstatt Berlin and the Witten Days of New Chamber Music, working around the globe with such artists as the RSO Stuttgart, the Sonar Quartet, Quatuor Diotima, Sonic Art Saxophone Quartet, the Ensemble Ascolta, ensemble recherche, ensemble mosaik, ensemble adapter, l’instant donnee, Ensemble Kuraia, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, the Ardey Saxophone Quartet, the Namascae Lemanic Modern Ensemble, and SUONO MOBILE. In April 2017, his chamber opera »Tako Tsubo« was given its world premiere at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Malte Giesen has been teaching contemporary improvisation at the Karlsruhe Music Academy since 2015 and electro-acoustic music at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler since 2016; he is also active in New Music education in schools and music schools. He is one of the founding members of the Stuttgarter Klang Büro e.V. and is also an active member of Suono Mobile – Initiative für Neue Musik, as well as working at the festival »Neue Töne Open« in Stuttgart.
