Liberation Orchestra of Inverted Traditions

The Liberation Orchestra of Inverted Traditions is composed of the Ensemble Modern and an alternating group of musicians from western Africa. The project started in 2019, when Ensemble Modern was invited to the festival ›AfriCourage‹ in Gambia by Goethe Institut Senegal, where a concert based on improvisation was realized. Following this first encounter, the Liberation Orchestra of Inverted Traditions will develop a new concert project in 2022, which will be premiered during the cresc... Biennial for Current Music Frankfurt Rhine Main in February 2023. For this concert, five musicians from Senegal come to Darmstadt to continue the cooperation. Furthermore, the orchestra is joined by composer and percussionist Jessie Cox, with whom Ensemble Modern previously worked together for the project ›Afro-Modernism in Contemporary Music‹ in 2020. Already in the beginning of November 2021, two musicians of Ensemble Modern have travelled to Senegal for first try-outs.

Proclaimed goal of the Liberation Orchestra of Inverted Traditions is to create a dialog between different cultures of music and conventions of concerts and staging in which participants perform and exchange on equal footing.
