Alexander von Schlippenbach

Alexander von Schlippenbach, born in Berlin in 1938, has been one of the decisive figures in Western European free jazz since the mid-1960s as a pianist and initiator of various projects. During the 1960s he studied composition in Cologne, founding the Globe Unity Orchestra in 1966. Since 1970 he has continuously performed freely improvised music with the Alexander von Schlippenbach Trio. In 1988 he founded the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra; he is also present in several smaller formations.
